Skin Conditions

Dry skin: generally is often due to a lack of vitamin B in the diet and can easily be remedied by undertaking a few simple measures. Good all-round sources of vitamin B include goat’s milk, wheatgerm, wholegrain rice, avocados, sunflower seeds, sprouted seeds and oats so an increased intake of these foods in addition to hydrating the skin with natural moisturisers and by drinking plenty of water often does the trick.

Eczema: usually begins in childhood and is a condition which manifests on the skin but affects the whole metabolic system. It can be severely affected by diet, stress, washing powders, synthetic clothing and bed linen and commercial skin care products and all these factors need to be taken into account when undergoing treatment whether conventional or alternative. The main requirement for eczema affected skin is a natural moisturiser such as coconut oil and regular use has been shown to prevent flare-ups and to reduce the need for topical corticosteroids which do not cure the condition but simply suppress the symptoms and can lead to thinning skin.

Psoriasis: also responds well to regular hydration with natural moisturisers and coconut oil can be very beneficial. It is an inherited condition and usually chronic, flaring up at intervals and often at times of stress.

Rosaceae: produces acne-like symptoms but usually occurs from the mid-30s onwards. Beginning with flushing of the nose and cheeks, these areas may go on to become permanently red with small pus-filled spots. Hot spicy food, tea, coffee and alcohol may aggravate the complaint as does stress. Common causes are thought to be the use of oral contraceptives and / or steroid creams and possibly a deficiency of B vitamins. Conventionally, antibiotics may be prescribed.
Essential oil of German Chamomile is a useful anti-inflammatory and many rosaceae sufferers find that switching to a more natural skin care regime using products containing this ingredient is beneficial. Rosewater or witch hazel used as toners can also be soothing.
