May 2008 — Countdown to Summer

With summer fast approaching we all want to look and feel our best and with the current weather bright, sunny and 70 degrees in early May what more could we want to spur us on.

Below are just 5 simple ideas to get you ready for the holiday season. Promise yourself that you will do each and every one of them at least once a week before the end of May.

1. Eat fresh, seasonal, local produce as much as possible. Asparagus, broad beans and spinach are all about to hit the shops and Jerusalem artichokes, leaf beet, spring cabbages and cauliflowers, lettuce, radish, rhubarb and lots of fresh herbs are also available. All of these are rich in antioxidants which are great for pepping up your skin and low in calories which is great for pepping up your body.

2. Drink more water but don't set yourself an unachievable task here. A simple way of doing it is to drink as soon as you feel hungry. This may seem odd when you think you want something to eat but often what we perceive as hunger is actually a sign of dehydration. After a glass of water or some antioxidant-packed green or white tea you may find that you weren't actually hungry after all.

3. Make sure you spend at least 30 minutes outside in the fresh air every day. Coupling this with a brisk walk is ideal. Vitamin D which we need for for good bone strength and formation and to prevent muscle weakness and spasm is manufactured in the body after exposure to sunlight. Don't over do it but a little sunshine now can help get the skin ready for the hotter days to come.

4. Eat a few almonds every day. They contain high levels of vitamin E which helps improve skin tone and are also rich in antioxidants which help prevent premature aging. As part of a low calorie diet, almonds have been shown to help people shed pound more effectively than those on a diet of the same amount of calories but which is high in carbohydrates. See Healthy Eating for more details.

5. Treat yourself to some chocolate every day but remember that only dark chocolate with over 70% cocoa solids will do. We're back to those antioxidants again (the higher the cocoa solids the more antioxidants there will be) which help prevent premature aging and its related disease and recent research has also shown that dark chocolate can help decrease mildly elevated blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Take a look at the Healthy Eating section for some recipe ideas for chocolate Sunflower Seed Clusters or Product of the Month if you prefer your chocolate as the face pack variety.
